Gifts were also given to students at the Answering the Cry of the Poor Community Learning Centre Stage 6. A special award was to the best performing girl and boy of each of the learning centres.
The 310 gifts were prepared by the Digicel Foundation. Its executive officer Beatrice Tomureisa said the O’Connor Community Learning Centre was one of the best performing in 2013, reflecting the commitment and effort of teachers with direction from head teacher Renagi Tomureisa.
The Peter O’Connor Foundation has supported the school at Gerehu and other schools in PNG with funding for teacher salaries.
The chair of the Peter O’Connor Foundation, John Bottoms, said, “It was gratifying to see the foundation’s efforts bearing fruit in better education for children in PNG – the very work that the late Peter O’Connor had in mind in with his bequest.”
An article and photo about the event was published in the National newspaper in PNG. A clip is here.
